Hiking & Walking Trails

Block Island is a paradise for hikers and walkers alike. With its diverse terrain and breathtaking views, the island allows you to connect with nature, discover hidden gems, and get some exercise all at the same time.

The Greenway on Block Island refers to a network of walking trails that cover over 28 miles of the island's landscape featuring open space, rolling hills, stunning vistas and amazing wildlife. These trails are accessible to the public free of charge and provide opportunities to explore the island's natural beauty. While there is no specific map dedicated to the Greenway trails, visitors can look for stone markers or wooden signs that indicate the presence of the Greenway.

Here are a few notable trails on the island:

Rodman's Hollow

Located in the southwest part of the island, Rodman's Hollow is a 230-acre glacial outwash basin that features lovely walking trails. The entrance to Rodman's Hollow is off Black Rock Road, which is accessed from Cooneymus Road.

Clay Head Preserve

Known as the “The Maze”, this trail offers walkers unparalleled views along the northeastern shore of the island. Off Corn Neck Road, its paths meander along the bluffs, before ending at Settlers’ Rock.

Block Island Greenway Traverse

A 5.6-mile point-to-point trail that runs from Payne Road to Beacon Hill Road. This trail is generally considered moderately challenging and takes an average of 2 hours and 3 minutes to complete.

Hodge Preserve

A 25-acre parcel that connects to the Block Island National Wildlife Refuge, this trail takes you through a secluded grassland, charming woodlands, and offers stunning views of the Great Salt Pond. Located off of the south end of Corn Neck Road, this is a moderately challenging hike that spans 3 miles in total length.

Remember to stay on marked trails, respect the natural environment, and follow any posted rules or regulations when hiking or walking on Block Island. The taking of any natural item, including rocks and wildflowers is discouraged, as is building stone cairns. And as always, it's a good idea to be prepared with appropriate footwear, water, and sun protection.

Happy exploring and enjoy your time on trails of Block Island!
